Drawing 1.01-Classical Drawing Workshop

Learn to draw like the Masters with Dan Freeman of ArtClassBrooklyn

Drawing 1.01 Basic Classical Drawing Workshop is a fascinating exploration into the basics of figurative art using Pencil and Paper. Starting with the basics of human figure drawing, you advance into studies of the human head and face, to achieve a likeness in portraiture—the goal of many of the great classical artists of the Renaissance.

Whether you are a serious art student, a talented hobbyist, or a beginner who desires to learn the fundamentals, this course will be exceptionally instructive. All of the important building blocks of classical representational drawing are included. Basics of Contour, Gesture, and Tone, as well as concepts of Proportion, Form, Light, Perspective, and Foreshortening, are covered utilizing thorough, comprehensive lectures and slideshows, supplemented by an outstanding variety of photographic reference materials. Hands-on, technical video demonstrations are included to show in step-by-step detail exactly how a successful pencil drawing of the human figure is accomplished.

In part two of the instructional program the focus shifts, using the skills that have been developed thus far to draw the human face and all of its parts. Each feature of the human face: eyes, nose, lips, ears, and hair, as well as the head in its entirety, is examined and described in anatomical detail. All-important facial proportionality is covered to provide a thorough understanding of exactly where to place facial features. Combining the described techniques with significant practice and dedication will lead to accurate individualized portrait drawing, the ultimate goal of this comprehensive course.

This is an intensive course that requires hours of practice. It offers extensive homework assignments to hone the basic skills taught. The goal is to achieve the classical Renaissance ideal: the rendering of the human figure. The objective of the class is to provide a challenging, rewarding experience in achieving the classical ideal of realistic representation in the medium of pencil on paper.

Minimal art materials are required for this course: 2H, H, F, HB, 2B, and 4B pencils (or, should you prefer, charcoal or conte crayons), a kneaded eraser, a hand pencil sharpener, and a ruler, along with newsprint and sketch pads.

The course author, Artist/Professor Dan Freeman, is a fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts who studied at Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Queens College, and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He has taught at CUNY and the New York Institute of Technology. His paintings and works on paper are in many collections, public and private, throughout the world.
