Description
In this class, we will work on a random geometric abstract painting (in the style of Matisse), a minimalist geometric abstract painting featuring bold geometric shapes. We will be doing this in Procreate with supplied brushes to keep your first one simple. Although the shapes are easy to create, I believe that starting with a brush set will get you creating immediately. You can always add more brushes and shapes! How many times have you looked at an abstract painting and heard someone say, « I could do that! »? While abstract painting looks easy to, it can actually be more challenging than traditional or classical painting. You will see that as I work my way through the composition and layout. This is because abstract art defies rules and conventions. It’s up to you as the artist to break rules, be expressive, and decide what is art. I will give you plenty of suggestions on how to make your art piece more interesting, from using blending modes to adding textures using clipping masks.
This class, Abstract Geometric Textural Art Using Shapes in Procreate, will show you some of my illustration and design methodology, and ways to use brushes to create this abstract art piece. In the class, I take you from start to finish in creating a complete painting, notably with plenty of texture.
As we work our way through, I will talk about the elements of art and the principles of design. I will explain how I make decisions about placement of elements and how I adjust to create areas of value, rhythm and movement, balance, unity and good form.
In this class I’ll walk you through:
my step-by-step method for making creating your own abstract art shape brushes
tips for creating compositions for a really varied and appealing abstract art piece repeat using brushes
my workflow for use of layers and other great features like clipping masks
adjusting blending modes to perfect the principles of design
methods for keeping the art piece fully editable for later adjustments and recoloring
If you’re an aspiring designer with a good basic knowledge of Procreate, you’ll be able to go through all the steps. This class will benefit anyone who wishes to create art pieces for use in their POD business or for personal use.
The key concepts I will include:
review of my brush creation and adjustments
approaches you can take in your illustrative work
applying principles of design to create a balanced and pleasing abstract art piece
This is an ideal class for you, even if you are not sure what you will use the finished art for, whether it be for POD sites like Society6 or whatever! Learning new Procreate workflows is always desirable. I guarantee you will create something really appealing, and it’s so much fun, once you get the hang of it!
Intro to Abstract Geometric Textural Art Using Shapes in Procreate
This short intro will give you an overview of the class.
Lesson 1: Discussing the Overview and Objectives
In this lesson, I will show you the objectives for class and explain the merits of the technique I use. I walk you through the beginning of planning.
Lesson 2: Brush Making and Layout Methodology
In this lesson, I will break down the complete process of creating your own custom geometric brushes. I also offer an overview of the steps I take when designing this sort of a geometric abstract and we review some of the elements of art and principles of design.
Lesson 3: Starting the Composition
In this lesson, I explain how I get started on a geometric abstract composition like this. I will show you some of the key techniques I use and explain every step of the way. By the end of the lesson, you will have the beginnings of a lovely layout with plenty of interest, and you will know how to use the brushes in the accompanying download.
Lesson 4: Using Blending Modes
In this lesson, we will work a lot more on the composition and how to arrange elements pleasingly. I also use the blending modes to create subtle effects and layering that also works in helping us create good design.
Lesson 5: Adding Texture and Working with Clipping Masks
In this lesson, we start getting to the nuts and bolts of the final artwork. You will see me use several different techniques to add interest and detail, using clipping masks on most layers. I explain why the use of the alpha lock may not be the best choice here. I show you the texture brushes I have created, and I explain the settings. Throughout the process you learn much more about blending mode.
Lesson 6: Perfecting and Special Touches on the Layout
At this stage, we pull our layout together, and I will correct the small details that make it work. I end up changing the fern element and make many other small adjustments. At the end of the lesson, you will see a complete time-lapse of the creation of the piece and the end product.
Lesson 7: Conclusion, Mockup and Next Steps
We will conclude everything in this lesson. I show you a bunch of mock-ups with the art and we end with a chat about next steps.

Project Description
Start this project by doing some research and creating a color scheme. Download and install the Procreate brushes provided to get started on your abstract art piece. Start by laying out a bunch of shapes and trying to arrange them into a pleasing design. Remember to keep shapes on separate layers. Work through each of the lessons, applying the concepts as I teach them. Try to create at least one brush, and experiment with changing settings on the brushes provided. Add texture to the motifs and experiment with blending modes. Once complete, try using it on a mock-up and post it here to share with your fellow classmates.
